Mulch prevents water loss from the soil through evaporation. It reduces weed growth when the mulch itself is weed-free and applied deep enough to prevent weed germination or smother existing weeds. Mulches keep the soil cooler in summer and warmer in winter, thus maintaining a more consistent soil temperature. Mulches can improve soil structure. As the mulch decomposes, the materials turn into topsoil. The decomposition of mulch also adds nutrients to the soil.
